Mental Health Awareness Month
Since 1949, May has been observed as Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. Represented by a green ribbon, the purpose is to raise awareness and educate the public about mental illness. In a given year, an estimated 26% of Americans ages 18 and older – about 1 in 4 adults – suffer from a diagnosable disorder. Educating communities about mental illness helps to reduce the stigma associated with it. It also provides a greater opportunity for there to be early intervention(s) that can aid in recovery.
If someone you know suffers from mental illness, reach out to them and show your support. Let them know they are not alone.
If you, like me, suffer from mental illness, take time to check in with yourself. Make sure you have the tools needed to successfully navigate the unprecedented times we are in.
We are all in this together.
